Things Canada Could Really, REALLY Use

  • A political leader with the oratory skills and eloquent touch of President Obama.
  • Airlines that offered good cross-country service at reasonable rates. Ditto rail.
  • A national high-speed rail line. Our major cities are spread veeeerrrrryyyy far apart.
  • A way to block advertising for US chains that don’t sell up here. Substitute Canadian brand ads instead.
  • For NBC to decide that Canada is a neighbour and consumer of US goods and thus let us use Hulu.com.
  • For Amazon to stock the Canadian Amazon with the same stuff they have in the US version.
  • Same as above, for iTunes.
  • An end to ridiculous “brokerage fees” on packages shipped here from the US. What nonsense.
  • And last but not least, Fuji Sushi.* At least here in Victoria.

*For those who don’t know, Fuji Sushi is a really great sushi place in Winter Park. Vancouver has great sushi, but nothing in Victoria compares.

Each country gets one every generation or so. Canada's last one was Pierre Elliot Trudeau. Whether you liked his polices or not, there was no denying the man has class, presence, and humour. And he had toughness. "Just watch me."
