Could the differences in life expectancy between Japan and the U.S. have something to do with diet, other lifestyle factors and genetics?

Certainly the Japanese diet plays a role, but I would discount the other two since a) lifestyle factors can be replicated and b) I don't believe there are serious genetic differences among humans.
But while Japan does exceptionally well, the facts are in -- universal health care coverage contributes strongly to quality and quantity of life. Canadians, who have the same lifestyle and genetics as the US, enjoy a *three-year* advantage in average lifespan.
