Snow gave way to wind Monday in the capital region as the second-highest month for snow ever recorded in Victoria drew to an end.

Environment Canada issued a wind warning as winds gusted up to 55 km/h, and B.C. Hydro crews were kept hopping as power lines were blown down all over the island, affecting about 8,000 to 10,000 customers.

Environment Canada meteorologist David Jones said preliminary data shows 84 centimetres fell on Victoria this past month. That’s still a distant second to December 1996, when 124 centimetres fell.

The only other month that came close was December 1968, when 75 centimetres landed on Victoria.
