We had our first-ever (well, since we moved here anyway) power outage today. Lasted about an hour. At present the cause was unknown, but it appears that everyone from Ladysmith on down were affected. Luckily it happened at about 5:40pm, so there was just enough daylight left to last us till the power came back (the days are definitely getting shorter -- just a few months back, the daylight stretched till well after 9pm!). It was interesting looking over downtown near dusk and not seeing the lights on no matter where we looked.
This was particularly noteworthy because in our experience over the last nine months, we haven't had any power problems. At all. Quite different than our Florida experience, even in years without hurricanes! :)

Turns out it’s a very diverse and interesting (and beautiful) place with history, culture, multiple political parties, a budget surplus (most of the time), eco-friendliness, world respect and a vision for the future.
