Some additional Victoria stats and local comparisons.

Victoria, BC

Maitland, FL

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.7 km² (5.7 mi²). 12.0 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is land and 2.7 km² (1.0 mi²) of it (18.17%) is water. As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 12,019 people, 4,825 households, and 3,242 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,000.1/km² (2,589.1/mi²).

Winter Park, FL

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.4 km² (8.6 mi²). 19.0 km² (7.3 mi²) of it is land and 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²) of it (15.14%) is water. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2005 estimates, the city had a population of 28,179. The population density was 1,267.2/km² (3,281.6/mi²).

So, basically, it seems that Victoria, BC is a little larger than Maitland, FL (our current city) but a tad smaller than Winter Park, FL (next city over from us) but it looks like Victoria has about 3-5 times the population density for twice the popluation of Winter Park plus the normal popultion from Maitland added together. I suspect because Victoria's downtown is what is refered to as a "living downtown" or "livable downtown" in the sense that it is not just for business. The downtown area is a very functional downtown with lots shopping, restaurants, apartments/condos, and so on. People are out walking all the time there, everywhere, even in February when it is cold.
